Phillip Moffitt is a Buddhist meditation teacher and writer based in the San Francisco Bay Area.  He has taught Theravada Buddhism for the past 20 years and served as a co-guiding teacher at Spirit Rock Meditation Center from 2010 to 2018.  His teacher, the Venerable Ajahn Sumedho, inspired his book on the Four Noble Truths, Dancing with Life: Buddhist Insights for Finding Meaning and Joy in the Face of Suffering.

Prior to immersing himself in the study of Theravada Buddhism, Moffitt spent over ten years studying and practising yoga with teachers in the Sivananda and Iyengar traditions.  He has written numerous articles for both Buddhist and yoga magazines and journals.  Many of these articles as well as recordings of Moffitt’s dharma talks can be found on his website: dharmawisdom.org.

Moffitt’s most recent book, Awakening through the Nine Bodies, was published in September 2017.  The book presents his understanding of a set of teachings about the nature of consciousness that were transmitted to him by the Himalayan yoga master Swami Sri Premvarni Balyogi.  These teachings are useful to practitioners who wish to explore in meditation the various qualities and energies of consciousness.

In addition to teaching meditation, Moffitt is the president of Institute for Change and Transition which he founded in 1995.  In his work at the institute, he trains individuals and groups in the principles of values-based leadership and living with an emphasis on how to skillfully make major life transitions.  His book Emotional Chaos to Clarity presents many of the principles that he uses in Life Balance work.

Before becoming a meditation teacher and founding Institute for Change and Transition, Moffitt was an editor-in-chief and CEO of Esquire and led the successful turnaround of the magazine in the 1980’s.
