Right view (sammā diṭṭhi) for exp practitioners with John Peacock
13 May 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
This workshop is for experienced practitioners. Right View stands at the very head of the list that constitutes the Noble Eightfold Path. Yet, it is far from clear what exactly ‘Right View’ is. The early Buddhist tradition appears to have had two distinct interpretations of this important dimension of the path. On the one hand ‘Right View’ was seen in opposition to ‘Wrong View (micchā diṭṭhi) and was the corrective to wrongly held opinions and beliefs. On the other hand, ‘Right View, particularly in the Sutta Nipata and other early texts, was taken to be the abandoning of all views, as they blocked our ability to see things ‘the way they are.’ How do we make sense of these two very distinct ‘views?’ Is ‘Right View’ more highly nuanced than either of these views? During the course of the day we will examine these and other interpretations and assess their ‘practical’ implication.
