As human beings we are immersed in language and we rarely stop talking and communicating. As one philosopher put it; ‘We talk when we are awake, we talk when we are reading and talk even when we are sleeping.’ Language and speech, therefore, is the medium within which we live and in the digital age of social media, texting and emails this fact is even more apparent. It is important, given this situation, that we pay close attention to the ways in which we communicate through speech and other mediums.
The Buddha devoted an entire discourse to the right use of speech and language – he called it the Exposition of Non-Militancy. The way of the *Dharma*, he stressed, is a non-militant path – *araṇa paṭipāda. *But, in addition, Right Speech is pre-eminently the cultivation of *piya vacana * -pleasant speech. Pleasant speech, however, goes beyond the demand that one should not lie and avoid harmful speech, it consists in the avoidance of unprofitable speech and the cultivation of profitable and skilful speech.
These weekends will be devoted to the examination of our forms of speech and our uses of communication mediums in the contemporary world and what, perhaps ,in our age would qualify as Right Speech. The weekends will include talks, meditation practice, question and answer sessions and discussion.
