Bodhi Tree Brighton: supporting Buddhist practice and community

Bodhi Tree Brighton is a charity that has its roots in the teachings of the Buddha.  We run groups and activities where you can learn meditation and explore practice as it relates to daily life.  We host workshops on creative themes.  There is the opportunity to make connections with others and build supportive spiritual community.

All our regular groups are held at the Anahata Health Clinic – for directions see our contact page.

We invite Buddhist teachers to facilitate day long meditation retreats at venues in the Brighton and Hove area.  Some of these are detailed below.

Bodhi Tree Brighton does not have a fixed charge for its regular groups.  We are committed to the principle of Dana, the Pali word for generosity, or giving, dating back to the days of the Buddha.

Hungry Ghost Retreat : Healing the Heart-Mind in Recovery

with
Vince Cullen

Middle Street School, Middle Street, Brighton BN1
Saturday 20th April 2013 9.30/10am - 5pm

A Day-long retreat exploring Buddhist practices for recovery from Addictions.
A day of talks, sitting and (weather permitting) walking practice focused on recovery in a wholly Buddhist sense. Some silent meditation; and some Loving-kindness and Forgiveness practice.
This retreat is offered as an opportunity to experience a wholly Buddhist approach to recovery from all forms of addiction. The retreat is open to those new to recovery as a support to their ongoing abstinence.
Click here for more information on Abstinence
Those who have been in recovery for a longer time - perhaps 12-step, SMART or otherwise - are also very welcome to discover an alternative and complementary approach to recovery.

Information on the essential practices of Loving-kindness can be found here...
Information on the essential practices of Forgiveness can be found here...
These practices are for healing the heart-mind in recovery and will be central to the day`s practice.
It is important to note that you do not have to be a Buddhist to practice Sajja, Sila, meditation or mindfulness. Recovering people of all faiths or none are welcome on this retreat.

- Registration and tea will be available from 9.30am.
- The day will start at 10:00am with a welcome talk and introduction to mindfulness meditation for recovery.
- Please bring vegetarian food for a shared lunch.
- As for all retreats, retreatants are required to commit to Sila - To refrain from harming any living being
- To refrain from taking what is not offered
- To refrain from sexual and sensual misconduct
- To refrain from false speech (including idle gossip, harsh and divisive speech)
- To refrain from taking substances which disturb the balance of the mind.

- The retreat will close at 5:00pm.
The retreat teacher is Vince Cullen. Vince is an ex-alcoholic who has been associated with the Wat Thamkrabok monastery in Thailand and Buddhist-oriented drug and alcohol recovery since 1998. Vince facilitates the Fifth Precept meditation for recovery group in Newbury, West Berkshire and is a charter member of the Buddhist Recovery Network
Generosity/Dana:
In keeping with the ancient Buddhist tradition teachers do not charge for their teachings. However it is customary to offer Dana or a donation for the teacher or their organisation at the end of the retreat.
More information on dana can be found here...
An interview with Vince can be found here...

Events in the UK:

Earth Care Day, London, UK

26 May, 2103

Come and join us for a day of working and practicing together, expressing our care and love for our planet.

We will be working in Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, a 33 acre woodland in a disused 19th century cemetery, doing some habitat conservation work. The day will be framed by periods of meditation and contemplation and hopefully be an opportunity to meet and connect with like minded people.

This day will be run jointly by SanghaSeva and London Insight.

Facilitated by Nathan Glyde and Zohar Lavie

Interconnectedness Weekend

22 - 23 June, Brighton, UK

This non- residential weekend consists of a day of silent meditation practice followed by a day of meditation in action: working while practicing.

It is possible to join either or both days of the weekend.

The weekend is run jointly by SanghaSeva and BodhiTreeBrighton

Facilitated by Zohar Lavie

Earth Care Retreat, Devon, UK

26 August - 2 September, 2012

We will work with the Sharpham Trust, a local Devon charity, combining work in their tree nursery with time for meditation and reflection. This retreat will be a time of simplicity in nature where we can discover ourselves in new ways. We envision this as a time for giving our energy to help tender new roots grow, and receiving a new deeper connectedness in nature.

The retreat will be facilitated by Zohar Lavie.
