Walk for Khuphuka 2010 - Saturday 25th September - 10-4pm

Thursday, July 29, 2010

We warmly invite you to join London Insight Meditation’s Walk for Khuphuka 2010 on Saturday, 25th September in Richmond upon Thames. We anticipate that this will be one of the high points of the London Insight programme this year:

* Raising funds for the Khuphuka Project’s remarkable work with people affected by HIV/AIDS in rural South Africa

* Providing an opportunity for us to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Richmond Park and the nearby riverside meadows together.

Last year’s walk on Hampstead Heath raised over £14,000 and enabled the Khuphuka Project to begin building a community centre to boost its pioneering HIV/AIDS work in an impoverished and isolated area in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa.

This year, the Khuphuka Project aims to buy a seven-seat Landrover, a tough, all-terrain vehicle that will enable project workers to reach outlying communities served only by gravel roads that after heavy rain are impassable to normal vehicles.  The Landrover will also transport local people to clinics and government offices that are otherwise very difficult for them to reach.  Access to the services these clinics and agencies provide will make an enormous difference to the adults and children living in these communities.

A second-hand Landrover in good condition costs about £18,000 in South Africa, and it is our hope that together can raise well over half of this amount through this year’s walk.

WHERE AND WHEN

The walk will begin and end at Richmond Green, close to Richmond station. We will gather there from 10am and set off along the Thames at 10.30.  Lunch will take in the view at Pembroke Lodge in Richmond Park.  After the walk, at approximately 4:30pm, we will celebrate our achievement with refreshments back at the Green.

For those who do not wish to be with us for the full route, it will be possible to join or finish the walk halfway at Pembroke Lodge.  Along the route there will be fun, a few surprises, and of course the pastoral landscape and varied wildlife of this fascinating area. All walkers will receive a special gift to commemorate the day.

HOW YOU CAN TAKE PART

(1) As a sponsored walker

We hope that as many of you as possible will choose to raise sponsorship from friends, family and colleagues.  Collecting donations online through the website http://www.justgiving,com is both simple and secure. Just Giving provides easy instructions for setting up your own webpage, and we are here to help with any questions you might have about the process, and to offer advice on making your page as eye-catching and informative as possible. Alternatively, we are happy to provide you with a traditional print sponsorship form.

(2) As a supporting walker

Please come and join the fun on September 25th without raising sponsorship, and simply make a personal donation to the Khuphuka Project (suggested minimum £10).

(3) As a sponsor

If you are unable to join the walk, we hope that you will consider participating as a sponsor of the event. You will be with us in spirit, and equally a part of a successful effort to relieve suffering.
To add your support for Khuphuka you can make a donation via London Insight’s Justgiving page - http://www.justgiving.com/walkforkhuphuka2010
